Criteria internships

Criteria internships 2024

These criteria help Social Wok Hub to assess the quality of new potential internships. The criteria are meant to help making educated decisions in the case of new internship organisations, and explicitly aren't suitable to determine the quality of internships the Social Work Hub already offers.

The organisation

  • The internship organisation provides service(s) that fit the social work profession, as defined by the IFSW This includes that the service(s) the organisation provides are methodical.
  • Specifically for the modules The People and The Context, the organisation has to exist for at least one year.
  • The continuity of the organisation is guaranteed for the duration of the internship.

The supervisor

  • The student is supervised by a social worker who has completed a higher educational degree in Social Work (bachelor at minimum) and has a minimum of two years of field experience as a social worker. Alternatively, the supervisor has completed a higher social studies degree (bachelor at minimum) other than Social Work (such as youth work, development work, creative therapy, psychology, pedagogy among others), combined with a minimum of two years of field experience as a social worker. For a maximum of one semester, in consultation with the internship office and the study coach, it’s possible to deviate from this criterium.
  • The supervisor is employed as a social worker within the organisation for the duration of the internship. In the case the supervisor (temporarily) leaves the organisation, changes role or is out of office for an extended time, the presence of an alternative supervisor who fits the criteria is guaranteed. For a maximum of one semester, in consultation with the internship office and the study coach, it’s possible to deviate from this criterium.
  • The supervisor regularly observes the performances of the student and conducts one-on-one development talks with the student at least once every two weeks for the duration of the internship.
  • The supervisor is able to communicate with Social Work Hub in English, French, Arabic, Dutch en Germany .
  • The supervisor is not part of the private network of the student.

Role of student within organisation

  • The student is allowed to execute social work tasks in a relatively independent manner.
  • The student is allowed to shadow the supervisor and other social workers within the organisation.
  • The student works at the organisation supernumerary and holds no final (legal) responsibility for the tasks that they perform.
  • The student has access to policy documents and client files.
  • For the module The Change, the student is allowed to occasionally interview employees, service users and/or managers when needed for an assignment.
  • The student is able to work in the organisation in the context of at least three of the social work qualifications as formulated by Social Work Hub.
