STUDENT BUDGET

Students on arrival at the destination would of course like to know what the costs will be. The budget information below is intended for students who are entering a Minor program or internship at 'Social-Work'.

Remember that this is our best estimate (November 2022).
  • Accommodation

Apartments. Budget 400-500 per month for a shared apartment.

Students can share a furnished apartment for about €500-700 per month. The flats are usually large and spacious and many students share, keeping costs down.

Students can stay in our service flats for €380 to €460 per month.

  • Food

Budget €50-70 per person per month in a shared flat.

Fruits and vegetables are readily available and inexpensive. Supermarkets provide a good base with many imported and exotic products. There are many street vendors, soda and juice shops, bakeries and mini markets.

Fast food is readily available and almost all the major multinationals are here, along with many of the local food and shops selling local cuisine.

Almost all eateries deliver to home.

  • Dining out

    Budget €70-100 per month.

There are literally hundreds of restaurants and cafes in the city. All kinds of food are available. If you eat out once a week, that's about $100 a month. Note, however, that it is difficult to estimate exactly how much you will spend, as it depends on whether you choose a 5-star restaurant or something more modest!

Also keep in mind that in general (although depending on where you eat) the prices on the menu do not include local taxes and service charges, which are added at the end of the meal. A tip of about 10 percent of the cost of dinner (excluding taxes and service charges) is often expected.

  • Clothing

Budget around $100 if you have most of your clothes with you.

It is not always warm in the destination, and for the months of December through January you must have winter clothes with you. Temperatures during the day are 16-20 °C and at night around 5-6 °C.

The clothing industry is large and diverse and there are many different options for buying clothes. It is difficult to estimate how much you would actually spend on clothing, because that depends on your personal preference.

  • Travel & Vacation

    Budget around €200 per month

With regard to transport, taxis are the main mode of transport and they are very cheap. You can also use the public buses, but they are very crowded and not very good. The metro/tram is clean and reliable, but not very extensive.

Most students want to see as much of the city/region as possible and take advantage of this during their stay here.

Most of the main areas to visit are easily accessible.

Inter-city flights, buses and trains are the best modes of transport. Flights are obviously the most expensive mode of travel, but are worth it for longer journeys.

Usually there is a wide range of choice and travel offers available and we are always happy to advise and regularly offer one or two day trips through a trusted tour operator.

  • Utilities

Budget € 70 per person per month in a shared apartment

Water, telephone and electricity in your apartment will be at your own expense. We recommend that students use their own mobile phone with a prepaid card, especially for calls abroad. You can use an internet dongle, but students can also use the free Wi-Fi and computer lab at Social-work.

The amount above the allotted account takes into account the fact that you may use air conditioners but they should never run when you are out, this is to avoid unnecessary costs!

  • Other costs

    Budget around €50 per month

So, our best estimate (November 2021) is about $300 per month for living expenses (excluding accommodation).
